Etymology
تَقابَل comes from the Arabic root ق-ب-ل (q-b-l), which carries the core sense of a front or a facing side. The Form VI pattern تَفاعَل adds a reciprocal meaning, so the action happens between two sides at once rather than one party acting on another. The same root gives Arabic words for before (قَبْل), future (مُستَقبَل), and interview (مُقابَلة). It is a native Semitic root, not a borrowing from another language.
