Etymology

Tilmīdh is a loanword from Aramaic talmīdhā, itself built on the same root as Hebrew talmid, meaning student, and connected to the word Talmud, which means teaching or study. Arabic absorbed the word early through contact with Aramaic-speaking Jewish and Christian communities in the Near East. Arabic grammarians later treated its four consonants, t-l-m-dh, as a native quadriliteral root, spinning off a verb, talmadha, meaning to apprentice oneself to a teacher.
