Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root q-r-b, which carries the core sense of nearness or closeness. Classical Arabic uses the pattern fa'ula, reserved for verbs that describe an inherent quality or state, so qaruba literally means to be characterized by nearness. The same root appears across the Semitic family with the same basic meaning. It is not of Indo-European origin, so it has no PIE root.
