Etymology
The word comes from Arabic يُونان (Yūnān), meaning Greece, with the nisba suffix -iyy attached to form the adjective. Yūnān itself traces back through Old Persian Yauna to the Greek name Ionia, the western Anatolian coast settled by Ionian Greeks. Persian and other Near Eastern languages borrowed this name and used it to refer to Greeks generally, and Arabic inherited it the same way.
