Etymology
تَحالُف is the verbal noun of the Form VI verb تَحَالَفَ, built on the triliteral root ح ل ف, which carries the sense of swearing an oath. Form VI marks a reciprocal or mutual action, so the word pictures two or more sides swearing an oath together. Over time the term settled into modern political and military Arabic as the standard word for a formal alliance or coalition.
