Etymology

لاسلكي is a modern coinage, not an inherited word. It combines the negation particle لا ("no, without") with the noun سِلْك ("wire, cord") and the nisba suffix ية/ي- that turns a noun into a descriptive adjective. The result reads literally as "wire-less," built as a direct calque of the English term when radio technology arrived in the Arabic-speaking world in the early twentieth century.
