Etymology

Juzur is the broken plural of jazira, island, built on the Semitic root j-z-r, which carries the core sense of cutting or separating. An island is land cut off from the mainland by water. The same root gives jazr, the ebb tide that pulls the sea back and exposes land, and jazzar, a butcher, one who cuts.
