Etymology
Masrūq is the passive participle of the verb saraqa, built on the root s-r-q, meaning to steal. The passive participle pattern mafʿūl, formed with a prefixed mīm and a long ū between the second and third root letters, turns the verb into an adjective describing something that has undergone the action. The same root gives Arabic its words for thief and theft.
