Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic root ر و ح, which carries the sense of wind and blowing. From this root Arabic forms مِرْوَحَة, an instrument noun meaning fan, the tool that stirs air. Adding the relative suffix ية produced the adjective مِرْوَحِيّ, used in the phrase طائرة مِرْوَحِيّة, literally a propeller-driven aircraft. Over time speakers dropped طائرة and kept مِرْوَحِيَّة alone as the standard word for helicopter.
