Etymology
قُبالة comes from the Semitic root ق-ب-ل, which carries the core sense of front, face, and meeting. The فُعالة pattern turns that root into an abstract, locative noun: the state of standing face to face with something. Arabic uses it much like مقابل or تجاه, and modern news Arabic has extended it to mark a ship or coastline's position, as in قبالة السواحل, off the coast.
