Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root m-l-k, meaning to own, hold, or rule. مُمْتَلَكات is the sound feminine plural of مُمْتَلَك, the passive participle of Form VIII اِمْتَلَكَ (imtalaka), "to acquire, to own." The same root gives Arabic مَلِك (malik, king) and مَالِك (mālik, owner), so the word literally means "things held as one's own."
