جِلْدِيّ is a nisba (relational) adjective built from the noun جِلْد, meaning skin or hide, by adding the suffix ـِيّ. The root ج-ل-د also carries a sense of firmness and endurance, visible in words like جَلَد (fortitude) and تَجَلَّدَ (to remain steadfast). As a Semitic root it has no Indo-European ancestor, so no PIE root applies.
