Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root ر-و-د, which carries the idea of roaming about in order to seek something out, most often pasture for livestock. Classical Arabic dictionaries define رَادَ as what grazing animals or a scout does when they range over land looking for grass and water. The same root, in a different verb pattern, gives أراد, meaning to want or intend, and the well-known noun رائد, meaning pioneer or scout.
