Etymology

مُحْتَوَى comes from the Arabic root ح-و-ي, which carries the sense of containing, gathering, or holding something within bounds. The word is the passive participle of the Form VIII verb اِحْتَوَى (iḥtawā), meaning to contain or encompass, formed by inserting a ت after the first root letter. Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, so the word has no Indo-European root. The old sense of that which is contained gave rise to the modern meaning of content in a book, message, or website.
