Etymology

حَزَر comes from the Semitic triliteral root ح-ز-ر, which in Arabic carries the sense of judging a quantity without exact measurement. Classical dictionaries gloss it as guessing or estimating, and the same root gives حَزُّورَة, an old word for a riddle, a thing whose answer must be guessed. The root is attested mainly within Arabic; no well-established cognate in another Semitic language is confirmed.
