Etymology

حِساب is the verbal noun of the verb حَسَبَ, meaning to count or reckon. It comes from the Semitic root ḥ-s-b, which carries the sense of counting, calculating, and thinking a matter through. The same root gives the modern Arabic words for computer and accountant. It has no Indo-European origin.
