Etymology

قِيادَة is the verbal noun of قادَ, to lead or to drive, from the Semitic triliteral root ق-و-د. Under the fiʿāla pattern the medial و shifts to ي, so qiwāda becomes qiyāda. The same root yields قائِد, a leader or commander, which entered Iberian Romance as a loanword. Arabic is a Semitic language, so the root has no Proto-Indo-European source.
