Etymology
صاحِب is the active participle of the verb صَحِبَ, meaning to accompany. It comes from the Semitic triconsonantal root ص-ح-ب, which carries the sense of keeping company. The word passed into Persian, Urdu, and Hindi, and from there into English as 'sahib,' a term of address for a master or gentleman.
