Etymology

Daqqa comes from the Semitic root d-q-q, a geminate (doubled) root built around the idea of repeated striking or crushing. The same root gives Arabic daqiq, meaning both flour and precise, since grain becomes flour by being pounded fine. Related forms in other Semitic languages carry a similar sense of thinness or fineness produced by pounding.
