Ḥikma comes from the Semitic root ḥ-k-m, whose core sense is restraint or control. Early Arab lexicographers linked it to ḥakama, the bit that restrains a horse, and extended it to the mental restraint that keeps a person from folly. Over time the noun narrowed to mean sound judgment and, in religious and philosophical texts, wisdom granted by God or gained through experience.
