Etymology

سَكَّن is the Form II, or causative, verb built on the triliteral Semitic root س-ك-ن, whose core sense is stillness, rest, and dwelling. Doubling the middle radical turns the base verb سَكَنَ, 'to be still, to reside,' into a causative meaning: 'to make still,' hence 'to calm' or 'to soothe.' The same root gives Arabic its word for a home and for the diacritic mark that signals the absence of a vowel.
