Word family
Etymology
The word combines the noun ذات (dhāt), meaning self or essence, with the nisba suffix ـيّ, which turns a noun into a relational adjective. ذات is the feminine of ذو (dhū), an old Semitic word for possessor of. So ذاتِيّ literally means pertaining to the self. Modern Arabic uses it to render self- and auto- in scientific and political terms.
