Etymology

رَكَض comes from the Semitic triliteral root r-k-ḍ, linked to striking the ground with the feet. In classical usage it meant to kick a horse with the heel to drive it forward, and by extension to gallop. Modern Arabic narrowed the sense to plain running on foot.
