قَدَر comes from the triliteral root ق-د-ر, which carries the senses of measuring, apportioning, and having power. The noun names what God has measured out, hence fate or divine decree. The same root yields قُدْرَة, power, and قَدِير, the Almighty, an epithet of God. In Islamic theology قَدَر pairs with قَضَاء to form the doctrine of predestination.
