ساحِر is the active participle of the root س-ح-ر (s-ḥ-r), which means to bewitch or work magic. The noun from the same root, سِحْر (siḥr), means magic or sorcery. The word first named the one who does magic, a magician, and then widened into the adjective enchanting or bewitching. The root is Semitic and has no Indo-European source.
