Etymology
سِحْر comes from the Semitic root s-ḥ-r, with the sense of bewitching or casting a spell. It is the verbal noun of the verb سَحَرَ, 'to bewitch.' The word appears often in the Quran, where magic is condemned as the work of charlatans. The same three consonants also form سَحَر, 'dawn,' which is a separate word and should not be confused with it.
