سَيْر is the verbal noun of the verb سَارَ, 'to go, walk, travel.' It is built on the triliteral root س-ي-ر (s-y-r), a Semitic root carrying the sense of motion and travel. The same root produced سِيرَة, 'biography, way of life,' and سَيَّارَة, which once meant 'caravan' and now means 'car.'
