Etymology

قاتَل is the Form III verb built on the Semitic root q-t-l, 'to kill.' The fāʿala pattern adds a reciprocal sense, so the literal idea is two sides trying to kill each other, which yields 'to fight' or 'to do battle.' The root is shared across much of the Semitic family.
