Etymology
Arabic أَوَى comes from the Semitic root ʔ-w-y, which carries the sense of turning toward a place to settle or rest. The same root gives مَأْوَى, a shelter or haven, and the form IV verb آوَى, to give someone lodging. The verb is old and appears in the Quran, where a band of young men take refuge in a cave.
