Etymology
Arabic سَبْع comes from the old Semitic root s-b-ʿ, the family's word for the number seven. Scholars reconstruct the parent form as Proto-Semitic *šabʿ-. The same root surfaces across the Semitic languages, from Akkadian to Hebrew. Seven marked weeks and ritual cycles in many of these cultures, which kept the word in constant use.
