Etymology
قَرْيَة comes from the Semitic root q-r-y, tied to the idea of gathering and settling in one place. The same root gives Hebrew qiryah and Phoenician qart, both meaning town. Carthage was Qart-ḥadašt, 'new town.' The word names a settled place where people live together, smaller than a city.
