Etymology
The noun is the verbal noun of the Form III verb فاجَأَ (fāja'a), 'to take by surprise.' Both come from the triliteral root ف ج ء, which carries the sense of suddenness. The prefix mu- and the مُفاعَلة pattern build the noun of the action. Arabic is a Semitic language, so the word has no Proto-Indo-European root.
