Etymology
رَيّ is the verbal noun of the root ر-و-ي, which means to water, to irrigate, or to drink one's fill. In modern usage it names the watering of crops and land. The same root also produced Arabic words for narration, since carrying water and carrying a report were linked ideas. Hebrew רָוָה, to be saturated with drink, comes from the matching Semitic root.
