Etymology
سَراح comes from the Semitic root س-ر-ح, whose base sense is letting livestock out to graze freely. From that image the noun came to mean setting something loose, hence release or freedom. In legal and Quranic language it names the release of a wife in divorce, as in سَراحاً جَميلاً, an honorable release. Modern news Arabic fixes it in the phrase إطلاق سراح, the freeing of a detainee.
