Etymology

حافِلة comes from the Arabic root ح-ف-ل (ḥ-f-l), which means to gather, to fill, or to be crowded. It is the feminine active participle of the verb حَفَلَ, to teem or be full. Modern Arabic adopted the word as the standard term for a passenger bus, a vehicle full of people. It belongs to the same family as حَفْلة, a party or gathering.
