Etymology
Arabic سُكَّر came from Persian شكر (shakar), which in turn traces back to Sanskrit शर्करा (śarkarā), a word for gravel or grit that was extended to granulated sugar. The term moved from South Asia through Persia into the Arab world, and Arab traders then carried it into medieval Latin as succarum and Old French as sucre, which gave English sugar. The Arabic consonants س-ك-ر also form a native root meaning drunk or intoxicated, but sukkar is a separate borrowing that was simply fitted into that root's noun pattern.
