Etymology
مُواعَدَة is the verbal noun of the Form III verb وَاعَدَ, built on the triliteral root و-ع-د, which carries the sense of promising or fixing a time. Form III adds a long alif after the first root letter to mark reciprocal action, so the word literally denotes two parties promising or arranging something with each other. In contemporary usage this reciprocal sense narrowed to mean romantic dating.
