Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic triliteral root ش-ر-ف, which carries the sense of height and elevation. From physical loftiness the meaning shifted to social and moral elevation, that is, honor and nobility. The stative verb شَرُفَ means to be high or noble, and شَرَف is its verbal noun.
