بَوّابة comes from the Semitic root b-w-b, the same root behind باب (bāb), the everyday word for door. The faʿʿāla pattern intensifies the base, giving the sense of a large or principal gate. The root is old and widespread across Semitic languages. The Akkadian bābu, gate, survives in the name Babylon, gate of the god.
