Etymology
واصَل comes from the triliteral Semitic root و-ص-ل, which means to connect, join, or reach. It is the Form III verb built on that root. The Form III pattern فاعَل often marks sustained or mutual action, so the sense of keeping a connection going shades into to continue, to carry on. The same root yields وَصَلَ (to arrive) and اِتَّصَلَ (to contact).
