Etymology

جاه means high rank or social standing. Classical Arabic lexicographers treat it as a metathesized form of وجه, meaning face or countenance. The move from face to standing is common across languages: a person of high standing is one whose face counts among people. The root letters و ج ه were reordered to give the skeleton ج و ه, which surfaces as جاه.
