The word comes from the triliteral root ش-ق-ق, meaning to split or cleave. A شَقيق is a full brother, one split from the same two parents, and the feminine شَقيقة is the full sister. The same root yields شِقّ, meaning half or side, which is why شَقيقة also names a migraine, the pain felt in one half of the head.
