Etymology
The noun comes from the Semitic root ṣ-d-r, which carries the sense of going out, issuing, or coming forward. The chest is the part of the body that juts forward, so the same root yields words for sources and for what stands at the front. From this root Arabic also forms the verb ṣadara, to issue, and maṣdar, a source.
