The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root n-ḥ-w, which carries the sense of heading toward or facing a direction. The verb naḥā meant to go in a direction, and ناحِيَة is the place or side one faces. The same root gives naḥw, meaning both direction and, later, grammar.
