Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root ẓ-h-r, which links the ideas of the back, brightness, and what is open to view. The same root yields ظَهْر (back) and ظُهْر (noon), the time when the sun stands highest. From the sense of an exposed or upper surface came the meaning of becoming visible.
