Etymology
The word is the Form V active participle of the verb تَحَمَّسَ (taḥammasa), "to grow enthusiastic." It is built on the Semitic triconsonantal root ح-م-س (ḥ-m-s), which carries the sense of zeal and ardor, as in حَماس (ḥamās), "enthusiasm." The participle pattern mu-ta-faʿʿil marks the one in whom the state arises.
