Etymology
صِيانَة comes from the Arabic root ص-و-ن (ṣ-w-n), which carries the sense of guarding, protecting, or keeping something safe from harm. The word is the verbal noun of the classical verb صانَ, 'he preserved or protected,' built on the فِعالة pattern used for nouns of process. In Classical Arabic, صيانة referred to guarding intangible things such as one's honor or reputation. As Arabic absorbed industrial and technical vocabulary in the twentieth century, the word narrowed to its now-dominant sense: the routine care and servicing of machines, vehicles, and buildings.
