Etymology
عادَة comes from the triliteral root ع-و-د (ʿ-w-d), meaning 'to return' or 'to recur.' A habit is understood as an act one returns to again and again. The same root gives عادَ ('he returned') and, by the classical account, عيد ('feast'), the festival that comes back each year.
