Etymology

عاهِرَة is the feminine active participle of the verb عَهَرَ, 'to fornicate or commit adultery.' It comes from the triliteral root ع-ه-ر, which carries the sense of illicit sexual conduct. The masculine form عاهِر appears in early Islamic legal tradition, including the hadith that gives the child to the marriage bed and the fornicator 'the stone.' Arabic is a Semitic language, so the word has no Indo-European root.
