Etymology
Ẓuhr comes from the Semitic root ẓ-h-r, which carries the linked senses of appearing and of the back or upper side. Midday is the moment the sun shows itself at its highest point. The same root gives Arabic words for the back of the body, for outward appearance, and for the verb to become visible.
